Karoo Pietà: The South African Madonna that resonates in Malta
In June 2025, South African artist Glendine presented her exhibition Karoo Pietà at the renowned Christine X Art Gallery in Sliema, Malta. Running for three weeks from 20 June, the exhibition marked a milestone in her artistic journey, a cross-continental dialogue between the landscapes of South Africa’s Karoo and the rich cultural backdrop of the Mediterranean.
Blending her fine art roots with a contemporary perspective, Karoo Pietà explored the emotional depth of the human spirit, resilience, motherhood, and the quiet grace of the everyday Madonna.
A Contemporary Reimagining of the Karoo Madonna
At the heart of the exhibition was Glendine’s striking interpretation of the Madonna — a female figure Glendine has used for decades to portrait her self-portraits and female figures alike. Her Karoo Madonna embodied the enduring strength and compassion found in ordinary women, painted with her signature sensitivity to texture, light, and emotion.
Her works captured the essence of the Karoo’s vast horizons and subtle hues, transforming them into contemporary fine art pieces that invited contemplation and connection.
A Celebrated Malta Art Exhibition
Karoo Pietà quickly drew attention from Malta’s art community and beyond. The show was featured in the Times of Malta, the Malta Independent, and received recognition through a collaboration with Arts Council Malta. Nearly every artwork found a new home — with pieces now part of private collections in Malta, Spain, and even New York City, USA.
The exhibition’s success confirmed Glendine’s place as a South African contemporary artist whose work resonates across cultures. Her ability to merge emotion, technique, and symbolism continues to attract collectors worldwide.

GlendineArt: Continuing the Journey
Following the success of Karoo Pietà, Christine X Art Gallery has already invited Glendine to return for a new exhibition in 2026. The artist continues to explore themes of femininity, faith, and identity through her evolving fine art practice — with every piece reflecting her deep connection to both the African soul and the global art conversation.
Her studio, Karoo Madonna remains a space where contemporary art meets timeless emotion — and where each new collection tells a story of resilience and grace.
